by Roger Kahn In the wake of the tragedies of September 11, I see American flags everywhere I look. It is great to see so many people taking pride in our country. I love this country and I see the flag as a symbol of strength. What I also see is people not treating the flag with the respect it deserves. Just today, while I was at work, I watched a public works crew putting flags on utility poles. The main street was lined with flags on every second or third pole. I thought it was neat and thought the town sure has pride in this great nation. I watched them work for a moment. The men used care and respect while hanging the flags. Each flag was on a small pole that was inserted into a flag pole holder so the flag never touches the utility pole or the ground. All looked fine until I looked up. There was no light on the pole. Apparently the local government official that ordered the flags to be put up is not quite familiar with the proper displaying of the flag. For those of you who may not know, a flag being displayed outside should not be flown at night unless properly illuminated. If no lighting is provided the flag should only be flown from sunrise to sunset. I also see many cars driving with the flags that snap onto your window. If you wish to display those flags thats fine, you are showing everyone your pride. Before you buy one of them please look to see where it was made. If it doesn't say made in USA look for another one. Do you think the companies in foreign countries care about your pride? I think they care more about your money. If you really want ot show your pride. buy American! Help keep fellow americans employed. Remember. flag day is June 14 and Independence day is July 4. Show your pride and fly your flag high!
