“Good Monday” is an Oxymoron

2/9/09 - Drew Vics

Combine me with a couple more oxygen molecules and you’d have an oxymoron for sure! But enough about me.

My girlfriend emailed me this morning and told me to have a “good monday” then she quickly suggested that that must be an oxymoron. I guess that depends on how you look at it.

Sometimes the only good thing about a monday is that you managed to survive another weekend and Friday is only 5 days away. I try to start my Friday’s early, like on Tuesday.

Why does Monday have such a bad reputation anyway? It’s not like it wanted to be the beginning of the work week, we just made it that way. Why should we hate a day that had absolutely nothing to do with where it falls in the continuum of time relative to commercial progress and our work calendar? Maybe we should look at it as it really is… We don’t hate Monday, we just hate losing two days off! Loverboy was right, everybody is working for the weekend.

It’s been suggested that we should change the work week to four days instead of five, in which case many of us could enjoy a three day weekend all of the time. Some companies have already adopted this new schedule, others have not, and some may just be too damn traditional.

I guess I don’t really hate Mondays that much. I mean, I’ll be heading home in about 4 hours, so that’s a good thing. This morning when I woke up I was really frustrated with some stuff, and it being Monday morning just made things worse. I quickly learned, after making some plans for the weekend, that if we have something worthwhile to look forward to we can tolerate anything. Even Mondays.

Sorry Monday. It’s not your fault.
