Live by example. Set an example. Be an example.
Easier said than done, but is it impossible? No. It just takes a little practice. Hey, sometimes we practice our whole lives before we finally become a good example, and alas, some of us may never get there at all. Sometimes we inadvertently set an example. In most cases the inadvertent example is set because we did something dumb and someone observing decided not to do what we just did. So in fact we set a good example for them, they were prompted to adjust their behavior to avoid certain disaster. Or at least to avoid looking like a moron.
We're doing what makes us happy in life. That's fine for the most part, I guess. But are we doing what's right? When you impart good advice to someone do you find that you aren't even following it yourself? So often we are hypocrites. We don't practice what we preach, and if we preach goodness we're doing ourselves a great disservice if we don't in fact practice it. If we do practice what we preach, and we're a bad apple, then we stand a good chance of spoiling quite a few others in the bunch.
Many people can influence us in our lives. That influence is their example, and they may not even be aware of it. But the observer is. My Mother and Father set good examples for me. My fiance sets a good example for me (most times -grin), yet I preach but I don't often practice (she'll confirm this). I need to practice more and preach less. How about you?
