The Powers of Nature

Lightning flashed, thunder boomed, and the rain came. Then I heard the plink of small hailstones against the windowpane.

The two cats at the foot of the bed, Dusty and Sasha, perked up and started eyeing the windows nervously, wondering what the racket was. They're very young so this may well have been their first hail storm.

My wife was still downstairs finishing up her late-evning television shows, a treat she enjoys during breaks from teaching. This week is Spring Break so she doesn't have to be up so early in the morning.

I sat upstairs reading a book, and enjoying the thunder and lightning. I love being a witness to nature's powers. Thunderstorms are one of my favorites, but I'm also very intrigued by tornadoes and hurricanes. I wish they were less destructive though. Sometimes I feel bad that I get a thrill watching tornadoes that, at that exact moment, may be causing harm to someone else.

There's just something about the power of nature that we can't deny. When storm clouds loom and the sky turns all sorts of eerie colors we stand transfixed, or gaze out windows in anticipation of the approaching storm.

There's beauty in the swirling clouds. Excitement in the bold flashes of light that turn night into day for a brief moment. The violent winds and loud explosions of nearby thunder are born from mysterious origins. Meteorologists understand the semantics of a storm, but that doesn't remove the mystery and awe.

Nature is bigger than we are. Though we are a part of it, nature reminds us that we are not stronger. Thunderstorms, hurricanes and tornadoes have a humbling effect.

In a song from Pink Floyd called "Take It Back" from their 1994 release, The Division Bell, the lyrics state:

"Now I have seen the warnings, screaming from all sides
It's easy to ignore them and God knows I've tried
All this temptation, it turned my faith to lies
Until I couldn't see the danger or hear the rising tide

She can take it back, she will take it back some day"

Let's hope "she" decides to give us humans a chance, and holds off on taking it back for a little while.
