The Story of the Miracle Babies and their Miracle Parents Dawn and Mike Moeller wanted to have a baby. They couldn't conceive on their own so they turned to the help of science and began undergoing procedures for in vitro fertilization, which literally means "in glass." Dawn underwent fertility drug treatments to help produce multiple eggs. The eggs were then "harvested," fertilized in a laboratory, and returned to the uterus. Despite using multiple eggs, the average probability of pregnancy through in vitro is only about 10 to 15 percent. In this case two eggs were returned with the hope that one would develope into a baby. As it happened, one egg split and all three developed to create triplets Matthew, Zakary and Tyler. The triplets were delivered prematurely, and all seemed to be okay until the doctors noticed some brain lesions on Zakary and Tyler. These lesions were actually signs of Bilateral PVL (Periventricular Leucomalacia), a condition which leads to Cerebral Palsy. Since this discovery measures have been taken in an attempt to reduce the effects of this condition as the boys grow and develope. Special exercises are done and even experimental therapies are being used in an attempt to give Zakary and Tyler an advantage over their condition. On April 24, 2005, the Triplets celebrated their first birthday, which was attended by family, friends and volunteers who have given their time to assist in the daily routine of raising Matthew, Zakary and Tyler. Matthew is developing normally while Zakary and Tyler are somewhat behind their brother in development. It is still too early to tell what the effects of the Cerebral Palsy will be, and how severe, but all who are close to this wonderful family remain hopeful, and ready to assist. These are truly miracle babies, and to have to cope with such a situation, the parents are equally miraculous. Matthew, Zakary and Tyler are in our prayers, as are Mom and Dad.
