Hit Me Baby One More Time

NBC is bringing back the pop hit makers of the 80's and 90's in a contest to see who's still got it, and to satisfy the curiosity of those who wonder "where are they now?"

I caught the first episode which featured Loverboy, A Flock of Seagulls, Tiffany, CC Penniston, and Arrested Development. Mike Reno and the rest of the crew from Loverboy certainly look older, time has a way of doing that, but they didn't sound too bad. They pulled off their hit "Working for the weekend" without any hitch, even if it did look a little odd.

What I did find disspointing was A Flock of Seagulls. I was never a huge fan, just listened to whatever tunes they had on my "Best of the 80's" cassette (yeah, I said cassette). Vocals were off, and I don't mean just off key, it sounded like singer Mike Score had been out of practice with a microphone for a while. There was an amateurish quality.

CC Penniston delivered, the audience liked her. Tiffany looked like a mom, but not too worse for wear, still attractive. She did a good job on her hit "I think we're alone now" but was out of key on the follow-up Kelly Clarkson cover she performed. There must have been something with the studio setup. Maybe a lack of monitors made it difficult for the performers' to hear the music or their own voice. Tough to sing like that, I've done it.

Arrested Development won, and that's what I expected. They were right on the whole night, great performance and great sound. They certainly aren't without practice.

I can't wait to see what the next episode holds in store. The Knack are coming back with "My Sharona" and we'll catch Tommy Tutone and some others. It's fun to see what they all look like nowadays, more fun to see if they can still pull off the old tunes.

Hey, we can't knock them too much, they made it to the top at one time. Let's give credit where credit is due.
