I could listen to Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights over and over again. I've played it back 5 times already today. All in a row. I'm not exactly sure what it is about this song, I guess it's a combination of things, like the originalty, the beauty in her voice, the melodies. I know if I played this song for my wife she'd say something like, "You're weird." But I don't think I'm weird. I think I'm appreciative of art. Kate Bush is different and that's what I like about her music. It is her expression, her art. She is unique. I first heard the unique sound of Kate Bush back in the mid 80's when the video for her song "Running Up that Hill" was in rotation on MTV. That song struck a chord in me, so to speak. I locked on to her originality right away and for some reason, couldn't imagine life without knowing that song. She next appeared on my radar when she recorded a duet with Peter Gabriel, one of my favorites and another completely original artist. The song, you've likely heard, was "Don't Give Up." Now I have the privilege of hearing her again because of the MP3, Wuthering Heights, I found in a music collection a friend had made for me. Now I'm off to the store to pick up a copy of her first release, "The Kick Inside," which features this track, and maybe I'll buy a newer selection from her discography, to see what she's up to now. The longer I live the more I realize how important art and music is to our society, it keeps us in touch with who we are. If we could only open our hearts and minds and appreciate the unique expressions that are being made through The Arts I think our lives would all be made richer. It's funny, being a musician and artist, that it has taken me so many years to appreciate art for what it is. I guess it's never too late, better late than never. And I'm certain a greater level of appreciation can be had when you combine it with the experience that comes through living. Music is art. Art is Originality. Be original, and appreciate the unique. As Neil Peart (another true original) said in a lyric for Rush's song Natural Science, from their 1980 release Permanent Waves: "Art as expression, not as market campaigns Will still capture our imaginations Given the same state of integrity It will surely help us along." Amen
