My wife is a big fan of the show Lost. You know the one, the plane crash survivors on the "deserted" island who encounter ever more strangeness with each episode. I must admit, we both watch it — I like the suspenseful, mysterious aspect — but she's hooked on that show like a soap opera; interested in the various plot situations and twists. I just want to know what the heck is inside that manhole they blew the lid off of last season. I actually missed the season premier so if it was anything good, don't tell me, maybe I can wait until the DVD comes out. [Editor's note: I found out last night.] Something funny struck me about the show today. I just realized that none of the characters have changed since they've been on the show and their clothing remains somewhat ungross. Maybe they're using coconut milk and aloe to wash their garments in the sea. Maybe Locke managed to boil some whale fat and brew up a batch of soap to keep the body odor to a minimum. Can you imagine the B.O. that these people would have after so long on an island together? I don't see any budding romances on Survivor! Let's not let the truth stand in the way of a good story. Here are a few points to take note of next time you tune in. Locke, one of my favorite characters, played by Terry O'Quin, is still bald, and doesn't appear to have required a shave. Those are the little details they don't bother to write into the script. There were the travel razors in his dop kit, but there are only so many times you can use an old blade before the shredding sets in, and his face doesn't seem too chaffed. The MacGyver that he is, I'm sure he can forge a few new ones from a piece of bamboo. But then, he does have his hunting knives. Can you shave with those? Hurley, one of my other favorite characters, played by Jorge Garcia, has managed to find a salon on the island to maintain his perm. I guess his hair could be naturally curly, and probably is. Who would make it look like that on purpose? Not to strike a heavy note, but I also believe that he would have started to lose weight by now. Sayid, Naveen Andrews, looks none the worse for wear, though I'm sure his hair would have lost its sheen after the first week. He must have been traveling with the larger bottle of gel that came with an Extra 15% More! Is there a gym on the island? Because this guy seems to be buffing up a bit since they've arrived. Dr. Jack, not one of my favorites played by Matthew Fox, maintains a steady 5 o'clock shadow and manages to keep his hair at a clean quarter-inch even though his electric trimmer was lost in the wreckage. Can you trim that with bamboo? Sawyer, the guy portrayed by Josh Holloway, has grown out his hair since the show started back in 2004, but now it seems to have reached a manageable length. Locke must put aside their differences and trim away the split ends with his hunting knife. Or maybe Sawyer has his own, I'm not sure. I thought he only had the gun. Charlie, the troubled yet sincere Aussie played by Dominic Monaghan, seems to have no trouble keeping his hair trimmed and the highlights fresh. Of course, it could be the sun providing natural highlights in his hair, right? And this is the guy who dares have a crush on a girl who's got to be stinking to high heaven by now! No way her perfume and shampoo lasted this long! Speaking of the ladies, I really have nothing in particular to say for any of them. They're still looking like starlets with a little dirt smeared on the face. Despite the lack of real food, makeup and hair styling they were used to back home, they all manage to stay in the same condition they were in when the plane went down. It's a story. It's a show. We're supposed to overlook these details. We loved Gilligan's Island all those years and those castaways didn't change much either. As they say... That's Hollywood!
