On Men and Women

All those jokes about girls maturing earlier than boys must be true to some extent. The idea wasn't born of imagination. As far as I can tell all of my male friends and I haven't matured too much at all. Ladies, don't take this as an opening to crack wise and spread all those stereotypical man jokes!

We're not all that, regarding the stereotype. Men are multifaceted, just like women, and can be caring, sensitive and creative. What we are is human. And though we may be a little more in touch with our "kid side" at times, we still have thoughts and emotions that can run pretty deep.

In this day and age it's all good. The war of the sexes should be over, but there are some, I guess, who just can't let it go. Whether a man can use a power tool better than a woman is not relevant. Each gender may have certain natural advantages, but each also has certain disadvantages. If we work as a team it doesn't much matter who can do something better than the other.

There are the select few on either side that cross the border, and I'm not talking about all the other borders that have been crossed sexually over the past one hundred years. There is the fellow who's a little less able in the garage and more able in the kitchen; and the gal who can change her spark plugs on a Saturday morning, do an oil change and still get to her son's (or daughter's) soccer game on time. But why make such a big deal of it? I think we should just do what we do, as people.

It bothers me when I hear women making jokes about "typical men." I don't consider myself a typical man, though at times I may exhibit certain of these characteristics. The fact is that there is much more to any one person than meets the eye.

I don't stand around with my friends and make jokes of "typical women," at least not where any woman other than my wife and a select few friends can here me. If I do it is in jest. And to tell you the truth, men get in a lot more trouble when they joke about women because we are more passive when it comes to fielding jokes about our gender.

I recall a woman in a Laundromat commenting in amazement, "Oh, look! A man who can fold a fitted sheet!"

It made me feel like a moron, even though I was being complimented to some degree. I thought, "what, just because I'm a man I'm supposed to not know how to do this?" I think I did make a comment, though now I can't remember what it was exactly.

I know how to fold a fitted sheet because my mom showed me when I was a kid. Is that such a weird thing? I learned how to iron too, and cook. My father showed me how to change spark plugs, solder printed circuit boards, drill, cut the grass and change my guitar strings.

Don't ever assume that the person standing next to you is typical. If you actually learned more about them you'd probably find that they know something, or can do something that you can't do.

We've come a long way since Rosie the Riveter and similar posters made their way around. I know there are still small battles in some circles and in some political arenas, but if people could live as people we'll be better off.

I have no issues with woman who are capable of performing tasks that were once considered "a man's job." As far as I'm concerned, if someone can do something, let them do it. It should be about people, not gender.

Why have a battle of the sexes? Why fight about anything? Life is too damn short. Live it the best way you can and for God's sake be nice!
