Welcome to 2006!

The saddest thing I can remember from my childhood was when 1979 went away. That decade would never come back; those days were gone, over, done, fini.

I'm not sure why the passing of that great year made me feel so lonely. It was a great year for me because it was the year my uncle took my sister and me to our first Rush concert. I was twelve.

I'm sure other great things happened in 1979, but that concert is the most memorable, and I'm sure the effect of seeing my idols live impressed me just as much as they do now. It was an important year for me.

I'm not saddened so much by the passing of years anymore, maybe because l've learned that the days gone by aren't necessarily the best days that will ever have been. Those days will only live on in our memories, but looking ahead we have many more memories to make and days to come. Each with the potential of being one of the best.

So if you miss 2005, consider all that 2006 can be. It's a nice round number; seems important. Maybe it will be the best year ever. But of course that's relative... each new year has the potential to be better than the last, so we'll never know if one will be the best, unless we knew it was our last. And that's not something I'd wish for anyone.

Have a happy new year, and many more to come. Just take it slow and enjoy the life around you as you pass through. Here's a fitting lyric to keep in mind:

"I let my past go too fast
No time to pause
If I could slow it all down
Like some captain, whose ship runs aground
I can wait until the tide comes around"

-Neil Peart (Rush), "Time Stand Still"

"Who are we? We find that we live on an insignificant planet of a humdrum star lost in a galaxy tucked away in some forgotten corner of a universe in which there are far more galaxies than people."
