I'm beside myself today. Angry at drunken bum drivers around the world! Don't do it. If you're sloshed, get a ride home... WALK! Too bad alcohol clouds the mind and we can't make logical decisions. Because of that two young girls were killed on Thursday evening, April 20, right here in Kinnelon, New Jersey. The drunk ass behind the wheel? Alive. Though I'm sure his life will not be the same; forever changed by this act of stupidity and carelessness. He'll wake up in jail Friday morning hoping it was all a dream. No such luck. I can't shake the sad feeling when I imagine these poor parents learning about their daughters' deaths. Their friends at school won't see them anymore. Their families left to grieve a loss that just should not be. One of our friends is a policeman in this locality, and he was on the scene. He's one of the two officers who located the girls' bodies. They had been thrown off the street by the impact. I don't envy his career, not on nights like that. Police can do a lot of good keeping trash off the streets but it seems that there is just no way to keep idiots from getting behind the wheel. Law has had some impact, but alcohol impairs decision making and there are people out there who end up getting behind the wheel anyway. In 2004 there were 16,694 drunk driving related fatalities, accounting for 39% of all traffic fatalities in the United States. The number is less than in previous years, and there is a downward trend, but 39% is still too high. There is just no reason to get behind the wheel. Many responsible people have called for cabs, or have friends drive them home. If you're at a friends house, STAY THERE! Please don't drive drunk, the worst thing possible can happen. I can't offer much consolation for those who have lost a loved one to a drunk driving accident, but I can sure open my mouth and urge people to practice responsible behavior. Open your eyes people! We can have a positive or negative impact on the lives around us... make it positive! DO NOT DRIVE DRUNK! Try to have a safe and happy weekend, and please keep in mind these families who have suffered such a tragic loss. For more information please visit...
