Primetime TV Perpetuates the Paranormal Ty Pennington, the energetic, rallying, megaphone wielding leader of the Extreme Makeover Home Edition show is heading up a crew of extreme ghost hunters this time around. Well, not as extreme as the crew from TAPS, I mean those guys are really on the paranormal cutting edge with their thermal imaging cameras and EMF detectors. For this episode Ty and his crew drove on up to Maine to help out a family with an autistic boy and three family members with hyperlipidemia. They also live in a 100 year old house which they believe is haunted. Would demolition of the old colonial home anger the spirits and create a violent scene reminiscent of Poltergeist, or would they accept change and continue to dwell in the new digs? To find out Ty enlisted the help of a medium, who, after a cursory walk-through determined who the spirit was and that said spirit would be okay with the rebuild. In fact, the spirit allegedly helped Ty out with some design ideas, how convenient. Instead of Infrared, thermal imaging cameras and EMF detectors, Ty and the medium walked through the house, "sensing" the presence of a ghost that even the young daughter of the homeowners' had a "feeling" about. Pardon my skepticism — which is a good thing to exercise from time to time — but since when does mere feelings and sensing "something" indicate the existence of a supernatural world? There are a slew of other reasons someone may get a "feeling." Maybe it's past lunchtime. Who knows? My point is, ghosts make for great entertainment, but should not be presented as fact because honestly there is no proof to validate these things. But then, people believe what they want to believe right? Far be it from me to preach about proof, logic and rationality. It is entertaining. I still read ghost stories. They're fun, and creepy. It would be great, or maybe not so great, if ghosts are real. But shouldn't we look more critically at what is presented as proof of it before we start accepting it? I know, I know... a good family now has a well-deserved, brand new home to live in with features that will assist greatly with their medical situations, and livelihood. That's wonderful! But ghosts... do we really need to believe in them and continue spreading misconception, that regardless of evidence, anything we want to believe in can be considered a reality? My favorite part of this particular Extreme Home Makeover episode was when Paul led Ty to the house in order to talk to the ghost. After leading Ty in, Paul turns and hurries away, letting the door slam shut behind him as Ty walks into the darkened house alone. A fun show, but as far as the supernatural is concerned, I think in the age of technology and great scientific achievements we need to look less toward archaic beliefs and lore, and more toward reality and the future of the human race.
